
Dogs habituate—but not with joy . Not with joy over, say, a sausage.
They rejoice… again and again, with the same intensity.
And above all, they rejoice over us.
Dogs don’t quantify , and they don’t complain that this sausage is smaller than last time.
They’re happy with a whole sausage, and twice as happy with a split sausage.
No matter how small I cut the pieces, they’re always just as happy—even with the smallest piece of sausage.
People, on the other hand, tend to destroy the joy of what they have by thinking about what they don’t have, no longer have, or actually wanted…
